Day 661

"Étouffée To Go" in the early morning for NewGF....

These days, I sit at the front window each morning, looking out across my Brooklyn nabe, watching people pass by. It's an idyllic way to drink a cup of coffee and munch on some breakfast; I also write a postcard to the radiology oncology people at the hospital, over which I will say a blessing before putting it in the mailbox across the street. I also decorate my wrist with the number of days until I stop taking hormone therapy tablets (18 more....)

That red sludge in the photo is a sort of étouffée I made yesterday after a long day of carpentry for a very picky client. It's not a "true" étouffée, because I added leftover turkey, plus mushrooms and carrots, but it certainly was delicious....

.... NewGF walks a block away from my house to work in the morning. Since I was home, I texted her that I would be happy to meet her to deliver her a lunch portion. So I ventured out in the slow rain, met her on the block, handed over a lunch and we walked with broad smiles on our faces.

It's too soon to know where this is going, but we're both very, very happy.

    I'm so glad you and NewGF are so happy!! Good for the both of you. :) My Granny was raised in the swamps during the Great Depression, and she's always told me that the heart of cajun cooking was "using whatever you had on hand or could easily find, then adding the magic of spice." They would use whatever they could hunt/gather, and use vegetables and spices from their small garden. If it was an étouffée you made including what you had lying around, I'd say it's definitely a "true" étouffée. It sounds delicious!
