Day 563

36 hours and holding steady: The Pain Flare

It came on Tuesday evening; I was in the bathroom doing my business when I felt a tightness in my groin. It slowly moved upwards, and I knew what was happening: the dreaded "pain flare."

I was ready: I had three different pain relievers available to me, so I grabbed the Toradol and popped it with a glass of water. I lay down and writhed for the next half hour, no relief. My sides got tighter and tighter, the pain emerged, and I thought about taking a second one.

I texted my doc, who got back to me immediately: don't take a second Toradol, you have to wait 6 hours. Take an Extra Strength Tylenol instead. I go to the medicine cabinet and pop that.

No relief. I lay down on the couch and wait for the pain to pass. It does not.

Another text to the doctor, it's now been 90 minutes since the pain started. He says he'll send in scrip for Dilaudid, a mega-potent opiod to a local pharmacy. I jump on the subway, and by sheer force of will get myself there: I pop a pill, and 15 minutes later, the pain is over.

It's Thursday morning; no pain since.

I'm so sorry to hear you were in such agony on Tuesday! That sounds like horrendous pain. Glad that it sounds like Dilaudid works though! I hope it continues to keep the flares under control. Many hugs, Rav

Thanks, Otter - I've been "clean" for the past 2 days, so it may be that the pain flares are over.
