Day 732

Coronavirus Diary: Day 3 - My Retreat Gets Cancelled

As you all know, I've had a very hard year when it came to my health, from fracturing a femur while playing basketball to undergoing treatment for kidney stones and prostate cancer at the same time. Just when I thought I was out of the woods, I developed sciatica on the right side, from my hip to the toe. It took 5 weeks, but it abated with a combination of pain killers, exercise, physical therapy, heat and time.

Now we're onto the latest calamity: corovirus pandemic. Here's what things look like in NYC: there are people still riding the subway, but in smaller numbers. I see people jogging, walking their dogs, going to the park, but that hum of uncertainty....

This evening I got an email from the retreat center where I was supposed to spend 5 days next week: they're closing for the next 6 weeks. Through all I've been through last year, I've felt despondent, but this really got to me badly. I rarely "treat myself" to anything luxurious, and this was going to be it: 5 days, all meals included, a private room looking over the lake.

But it is not to be. Maybe I'll hole up in a cabin....

And now I feel like I'm developing symptoms for COV-19: I coughed a few times today, felt feverish on and off, and I'm just fatigued sometimes.... at the same time, it could be because I'm sad, tired and, now, depressed.....

Aw, Rav. I'm so sorry. I know you were really looking forward to that retreat, especially after everything you've been through. I hope you are still treating yourself in other ways. A cabin is a good idea! I know it's not nearly the same. Instead of thinking of it as your retreat being cancelled, maybe do other fun/nice things for yourslef as a pre-vacation to rev you up for when the retreat is up and running again. Sending many virtual hugs.
