Smoked Turkey with Friends....
A few years ago, when I was with "Charmante," (who turned out to be not-so-charming), we spent a delicious Thanksgiving with a college friend and her family. It was lovely, but Charmante was not to happy when, on this site, she found a posting in which I recounted an incident from our college days (almost 40 years ago) when college friend and I had some intimacy....
.... and we've stayed friends over the years, and for that, I am thankful. Because while Charmante wore out her welcome after 2 1/2 years, College Friend and I keep our friendship alive with warmth, humor, a love of food, the arts, words, you name it.
Because this is the value of friendship: romances blossom and then go down in flames, but my friendships, well, they seem to hold up, and when they die down, lend themselves to renewal.
So they made the turkey and rice pilaf, I made a tray of savory stuffing, a friend came with the greens, and there was plenty of beer, wine and bourbon to go around. Son and I had a fine time.
And for this enduring friendship I am thankful.
