A and J got married today. It was beautiful and all A’s exceptionally hard work. She’s an impressive woman. J was wide eyed and mild. He didn’t smile overly. I wondered if he had doubts. A didn’t.
They married in the woods in sunlight surrounded by flowers and friends. Their speeches were full of love. J’s was domestic and sweet, A’s more high flown and richer, both expressive and true.
I was the only woman there not wearing a dress. On top of that my trousers were black and I had boots on. Every other woman was wearing a pretty summer dress, high sandals, a gossamer shawl. I was impressed by the turn out and cringed at myself.
At lunch I had an interesting chat with both of J’s brothers in law, successful and interesting men. The first was the husband of L, who grew up in Sri Lanka, the second was the husband of S, and had a commercial property business. I didn’t like the second one, he was arrogant and off hand. He had been good looking, and still was in a way. The less good looking one was far more engaging and interesting.
