A brief encounter
‘The hand of the law is upon you!’ he laughs as he grabs my shoulder. We’re walking down the pavement and it’s D, coming from behind us. He’s full of good cheer. He kisses me hello and says hello to Ma. He sees her horror and tells us he must go quickly as he’s on his way to the dentist. He pulls a face, as though he’s having a tooth pulled, he smiles a big smile and walks away. ‘Good heavens! Who was that!’ His effervescence is too much for her. I explain it’s D. He’s only a couple of years younger than her and married to my friend J.
