What a good time looks like....
I love to cook for friends, and the bigger the mess I make, the more I know that we've had a good time.
Last night's menu: homemade angel hair pasta with a kale-garlic-almond pesto, fresh tomato salad with basil and mozzarella (tomatoes & basil from my garden), and crunchy kale stems sautéd with onions and bread crumbs. Guests brought white wine and French desserts.
And we talked about all sorts of things. One of them had been to Woodstock (yes, THE Woodstock) and she described sitting at the top of the hill and watching Joe Cocker way down in the valley. Then it started to rain and she and her friends left.
One guest has been struggling with a blood disease since she was 16 years old. She's in her 60's now, and her body is emaciated: he bones stick out of her neck, her skin is taught and her hair thinning. But she's a pistol and helps herself to three servings of pasta; I send her home with the rest.
At the end of the evening we pile the dishes in the kitchen; it's an unholy mess and my pleasure will be reliving the memories while cleaning up.
Happy Labor Day, USA!
