Day 589

Radiation Therapy: Day 1 (and 43 more to go...)

I get up at my usual time, 6:30 am. Pop my med (I'm up to 5 of them now), shower, dress, have my cup of coffee and something to eat. I'm ready to leave the house by 7 am.

Jump on the subway, travel 2 stops, walk a few blocks to the hospital. I go down to the basement, where radiation oncology is, and the place is empty. I find Pam, who is the morning nurse, hand her a bunch of Black Eyed Susans I have growing in the front garden. I down a liter of water, put on my Airpods, settle in with the Acid House Kings and wait.

At 8 am, Laura, my technician whose going to work the $2 million machine you see in the photo, calls me in. "Okay, Rav, are you ready to do this?" she's all bright and perky in the morning. I love it.

I lie down on the bed, she straps me in, and then the fun begins: this machine is like a big eye moving over me, first it stares at me from above, then if turns and goes under me, makes lots of odd noise.

15 minutes later, it's over.

Until tomorrow, 6:30 am....
