Day 101

A Small Good

Honeybun's small family has been ravaged by Huntington's Disease. Most diseases can be fought. Unfortunately, this one cannot. If you have it, you'll die from it - unless something else gets you first. Huntington's is "a fatal genetic disorder that causes the progressive breakdown of nerve cells in the brain. It deteriorates a person’s physical and mental abilities during their prime working years and has no cure." It's essentially Parkinson's, Dementia, and Alzheimer's all at the same time, caused by a neurotoxin created by a faulty gene. It's also inherited. Anyone born of someone with HD has an exactly 50/50 chance of having it as well. Honeybun's grandmother, mother, and sister all have it, and an HD-positive friend committed suicide because of the symptoms. Honeybun and Bear have not been tested. They are scared to know.

There is a charity-walk for HD this Saturday. Honeybun and I are participating. Raising money and awareness for this disease that's killing his family. This disease that may take him away from me before we can grow old together. There are reports of a possible treatment (or even cure) soon, but for now we can only pray and do a small good for the HD-Community.
