Day 688

On realizing that I am very wealthy....

I woke up today to find out that my bank account just broke $1 million. It wasn't a big deal: my stock portfolio went up $20,000 overnight, and between this, my home with its rental income and my retirement account, I could stop working any day I want.

So I'm rich. Very rich. I have more money than all the people I work with, and most of my friends. Except for you folks, nobody knows how wealthy I am.

I got this money because a long time ago, I made two bets a that worked out very well. I'm not all that smart, but I do know how to hang on.

But I prefer not to show how wealthy I am.

I wear old jeans because they are comfortable and I hate to shop. I cook my own food, wash my own dishes, take out my own garbage, sweep my own floors. I could pay people to do this, but I don't.

I live like it could all vanish tomorrow. I am generous with others, frugal with myself. Besides my aching foot, I'm pretty happy. A good night for me is vaping some weed and strumming 'Lizbeth.

I can't help it if I'm lucky....

I love that you live life in a way that makes you happy! I've had friends that came into money, and it seems like they felt like they went the instant-gratification route. They'd end up bored and unsatisfied in the end, and others had blown it all in one go and struggled when life threw them difficulties after it was gone. Good for you for finding such balance! I opened an account with an investment firm some time ago. All the investing jargon confuses me, and I'm trying to learn more about stocks so I can make informed choices.

Admirable, Rav. I think it's great the way that you live: entirely self reliant and independent. You are free. You are lucky not just in your finances but in that you have found your vocation. The love you have for your work is the real gem in your life. Very rare.

Otter, the best book I read on the subject is "A Random Walk Down Wall Street." It's been updated a few times, but it's very clear and, dare I say it, fun to read!
George, I am one of the lucky ones, and I acknowledge that every day....
