• Day 81

Does this guy have a death wish?!

The OSP (Office Sex Pest) is really testing my patience lately! He's really taking advantage of Bitch Boss being on holiday.

Normally he would come in to our office to pester me only to be sent away with his tail between his legs by Bitch Boss.

However since she's been gone he's taken to sitting in her seat opposite me for his morning coffee, kneeling next to my desk when asking me a question (even if he's asking if I want tea) I've had 183 e-mails from him in the past 2 days. None of them make any sense and he's constantly forgetting to attach items or giving me the wrong e-mail address just so I then have to pester him for them.

He calls me Kiddo, Sambo, Sweetie and Mrs B ( his last name's Baker) I keep telling him that I don't like his inappropriate behaviour but he just can't take the hint. I really don't like the idea of being impolite to him or complaining about him to our director but I'm only 19 and he's a 56 year old man, his behaviour is just too much on top of everything else I'm already having to deal with! HELP

You need to make an official complaint my lovely. I know you hate the idea of it, but you have made it clear to him his behaviour makes you uncomfortable. He is seriously dreaming if he thinks he has a chance with you, what a moron! Either tell him if he does not back off, you will make a complaint or go straight to the top. He will not back down and if you say nothing, he will push the boundaries even further. Sounds like a dirty sod, give me his email and I will let him know ;-) Seriously though, he needs to be told x

Play by the book. Check what it says about harrassment in your employee handbook, and follow the process. And importantly, make sure at least one other prson who will stand by you and who has credibility knows what is happening and observes some of the incidents. I've dealt with this as a man-manager many times and wouldn't recommend some of my solutions but as someone relatively inexperienced in the workplace, working the system is my best advice. And if that doesn't work, and you are in a union, talk to your union rep. No excuse for this, and by the way I'm a man in his 50's

NB I think calling you Kiddo and Sweetie is still on the 'OK' side of things even in these oh-so-PC days but if he's calling you Sambo because of the colour of your skin, that is waaaay out of order!

Sharing my experience of this with all, the problem for Lammy is how 'in the company old boys network' this sleaze is. That can be very difficult to overcome, as I have found many times in a long career

Therese and the others are right. I am a Manger and our grievance procedure would give you complete support on this so I'm sure your company must have the same. There is also HR who might be able to help? Whatever happens don't put up with it!

Thanks for your comments! There are many other things he does (e.g staring at my boobs, going pwoaaarrr when I come into the office etc etc) It's just a bit much. I'd hate to make an official complaint against him as our office is only small and I'm worried about what kind of atmosphere it might cause but I'm really fed up about it! Many people in the office have noticed his behaviour and aren't impressed. I am one of 3 girls but it seems to be me that he targets the most with his comments. I think i'll discuss this with the HR manager ( she's also a good friend of mine at the company) and see what advice she has to offer. I didn't mean that him being 56 makes his behaviour sleazy, if it was some one my own age I would still feel the same, my point is surely he should know better?

Age is no excuse. Being 56 actually removes any excuse about it being a ham-fisted attempt to 'ask you out' (as someone your own age could argue), its just 100% selfish self-gratification on his part. Yuk.

Lammy, please complain otherwise he will only get worse. I'm all for a joke and chatting up a lady, but his behaviour is neither.

This was happened to my little sister at work and she wanted me to knock the dude out. I explained that would land me in court so I told her to just whip out the iphone when he came into the office and if he started his usual shenanigans just to point the phone camera at him and say nothing.
Later that week she told me the dude caught on that he was being recorded and quickly stopped and even apologized.

Sargazer, I've seen family members 'straighten' a pervy office worker with real or threatened violence. I'm a lover not a fighter myself but there was definitely a 'case to answer' and the retribution was exteremely effective.
