Day 750

The Sainsbury Centre

A great day with Apple (Sunny had work to do). It was pouring with rain so we canceled the walk on the broads planned and went to the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts instead, right on campus. It was a great surprise! Really impressive stuff all over the vast room, covering no less that 5,000 years of art, all the way back from 2,700 BC to now. I liked the way that the pieces were displayed, not chronologically but in themes so you could see directly how the ancient art influenced, inspired and gave birth to the modern stuff. I was totally captivated. Modigliani, Bacon, Picasso, Eric Gill, Monet, Hockney, Degas, Henry Moore, Giacometti, Epstein, Yoruba art, Eygptian art, and from Ecaudor, Peru, Colombia, Nigeria and Greece. The works from Africa and the Americas were put cheek to cheek with the modern European pieces and they worked magic together. The mix is enhancing and interesting. Even Apple seemed impressed and enjoyed the display. And we enjoyed the Magdalene Odundo exhibition downstairs too, loving her womanly shapes and spaces. Again, the juxtaposition of old and new, different countries and styles was fabulous. A flock of glass jelly fish was the finale.
