Day 37

The Wonderful Wizard of Oz

On Monday, Honeybun took me to Barnes and Noble. Honeybun hasn't picked up a book since he graduated high-school 10 years ago. He took me to the bookshop because he saw how drained I've been lately and knew the smell of books would perk me up. He was right! As soon as we stepped in, I felt a refreshing wave of energy over me.

He browsed the boardgames and music aisles while I flitted around the books. Eventually he found me in the "Mystery" aisle.

He had a book cradled in his arms. A collection of the first five books from The Wizard of Oz series - a Barnes and Noble Collectible Edition. He looked at me sheepishly as I stared at him with confusion.

"I think I want to get this one. I didn't know there was more to the story."

I was ecstatic for him! We left the store with our haul and headed home.

Last night he started reading, and watching him immediately get sucked in was the cutest thing I have ever seen in my life. Eventually he pulled himself to reality and turned to me:

"DAMN! Did you know Dorothy's slippers were originally silver?! Not ruby?!"

My heart is full.

When he's done with those, he should read the "alternate" Wizard of Oz stories by Gregory Maguire.....

I've been wanted to read Wicked for a bit now! If he completes this set, I'll mention it too him. He hasn't read a book in so long, so he's just easing himself into it. He was never a fan of Reading/Writing classes (he had some terrible language arts teachers), and the only time he read a book was if it was required or a graphic novel / comic book. :)
